Most of the rugs listed on this site are made from wool, but please check this before attempting to purchase. Cottom may also be used in the foundation of more industrially produced carpets. There are various types of wool used in the production of persian rugs. Some carpets are even made from silk, however, these are exremely rare and are usually used to decorate walls as opposed to being used as a floor covering, due to their expense and fragility.

The production of this type of "persian" rug dates back to at least 500BC which is the age of the oldest know rug, though, it was really during the islamic period that the persian rug rose in fame to become what it is today. The islamic period introduced the geometric patterns and designs which are today synonymous with persian rugs.

Other eastern countries also have large industries in rug production such as Turkey and India. These are often marketed as persian rugs referencing the style as opposed to the geographic location where they originate.

The country of origin is another feature worth considering. Trade laws in the US may prohibit importation of genuine persian rugs, as, persia is now Iran.
